Hockey Stadium

The proposed stadium is anchored among other large scale factories in Altstetten, an industrial quarter in the outskirts of Zurich. Sitting on a robust plinth, anchored between the railway tracks, the motorway and family orchards, the building signals the entrance to the city of Zurich. Visitors enter through a xcavity in one corner of the plinth and use a wide flights of steps that leads to a public city terrace, from where they have an expansive view across the Limmattal valley.

The main elements of the brief, a volley ball arena, ice hockey arena, and training hall are combined within the overall shape of the building. The volleyball arena hangs between the city terrace and the roof. The ice hockey facilities take up the northern part of the building. A veil of perforated and folded chrome steel is laid like a tablecloth over the building, unifying the different functions, while at the same time hinting the large spaces behind it.

Once the main programmatic volume options were analyzed, the biggest challenge was designing the stadium bowl. For this project, I developed a Grasshopper definition to automate seat count and recalculate the stadium bowl for every volumetric iteration. Once the bounds of the project were altered in 3D, the script automatically outputted a grandstand volumetric representation according to the sight line requirements. This process allowed to optimize site use, while keeping optimum distance of the spectators to the field.
